Understanding Tongue Tie

Tongue tie (ankyloglossia) occurs when the frenulum under the tongue is too tight or short, limiting tongue movement.

This can cause:

Breastfeeding issues: Babies may have trouble latching, causing feeding frustration and poor weight gain. (We do not treat under age 4 but can recommend infant specialists.)

Speech difficulties: Producing sounds such as “t,” “d,” “s,” “th,” “r,” and “l” can be challenging, affecting speech clarity. (We do not provide speech therapy but can refer you to experts.)

Dental concerns: Malocclusion, bite misalignment, and gum problems are common outcomes.

Other problems: Tongue tie can also contribute to sleep apnea, airway issues, and headaches.

If you suspect a tongue tie, reach out to our De Pere office for assessment and therapy options to improve health and function.
