Tongue Tie, Appleton, De Pere

What is Tongue Tie?

Tongue tie, medically called ankyloglossia, is when the frenulum (the thin tissue under the tongue) is too short or tight.

This can cause:

Breastfeeding challenges: Babies may struggle to latch, leading to feeding issues and poor weight gain. (We treat children ages 4+ and can refer infant feeding specialists as needed.)

Speech concerns: Difficulty with sounds like “t,” “d,” “s,” “th,” “r,” and “l,” affecting clear speech. (Speech therapy differs from myofunctional therapy; we can provide referrals for speech therapists.)

Dental issues: Tongue tie can cause crooked teeth and bite misalignment, increasing the risk of gum disease.

Other health effects: Linked to sleep apnea, airway problems, and headaches.

If tongue tie is a concern for you or your child, contact our De Pere team to discuss evaluation and therapy options.
